Christmas in July

Christmas in July is a huge mountain festival that brings the holidays to the warmer months of summer. Every July this downtown West Jefferson Festival brings many to the region to shop, dine, and enjoy all sorts of Christmas crafts and decorations. This event takes place to raise money for local charities over the Fourth of July weekend. Instead of the usual Independence Day celebrations, head over to Christmas in July in Ashe County.

Blue Ridge Brutal 100 Bike Race

This annual bike race takes place in Ashe County and begins and ends at the civic Center, but it’s the 100 miles in between that gives this race its name. Cyclists head through 100 miles of terrain in the Blue Ridge Parkway and its secondary roads in Ashe and Alleghany Counties each August.

New River Blues Festival

The New River Blues Festival is a popular music festival that takes place at Jefferson Landing on the New River. Numerous local, regional, and nationally known artists take the stage for this one-day music event. It’s a great opportunity to meet locals, enjoy some live music, and take in the gorgeous scenery and fantastic weather in early September.

Todd New River Festival

The Todd New River Festival is an event that brings record numbers every year. This festival takes place on the banks of the New River over a weekend in October. A fun community event, the Todd New River Festival celebrates the heritage of the Todd community with live music, children’s crafts, and games.

Ola Belle Reed Homecoming Festival

Ms. Ola Belle Reed was a nationally famous American folk singer and banjo artist that wrote and recorded the famous country song, “High on a Mountain,” that has since been rerecorded. She was born in Lansing, North Carolina and, every year, folks get together in Lansing to celebrate bluegrass and folk music, and the life and legacy of Ola Belle Reed. Artists and others come to the festival to enjoy song writing, live music, and lots of fun camping. The festival takes place in October.

Ashe County Choose n Cut Christmas Tree Season

Western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains provide the perfect climate for growing Fraser fir Christmas trees and as such there are numerous Christmas Tree Farms that dot the countryside of Ashe County North Carolina. In years past, area Christmas Tree Farms have been selected to provide the White House with its Christmas tree in the Blue Room and other areas. Visitors come from nearby metropolitan areas such as Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and Greensboro to pick the best tree and get other great live decorations. Some even stay for the entire weekend! The season usually begins right around the Thanksgiving holiday and ends just before Christmas Eve.

Old Time Bluegrass Fiddlers Convention

Ashe County North Carolina is a place where bluegrass and the best of Americana music has long been played and enjoyed. For more than thirty years, this festival has taken place the last weekend in July and combines the best of bluegrass and other types of folk music. Visitors come to hear live music, enjoy song writing, and celebrate Ashe County’s place in bluegrass music.
