Woolly Worm Festival

There may be copy cats out there since other communities discovered Banner Elk’s secret fun festival, but Banner Elk NC was the first town to celebrate the uniquely furry Woolly Worm Caterpillar and plan a large-scale family event around the funny looking worm. Every year in autumn, thousands of woolly worms appear and locals and vacationers catch as many as they can in the hopes of taking their worms to the Woolly Worm Races at the Banner Elk Woolly Worm Festival. In addition to the fun family atmosphere, the Woolly Worm Festival brings with it great food, interesting and rare crafts, kids games and live entertainment all weekend long! Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games is a large annual gathering of Scottish Clans where clans and their descendants, guests, and others come together to celebrate Scottish Gaelic culture. One of the longest running Scottish Clan Gatherings in the United States, this event, which takes place in July, is one of the largest summer events in the area. Taking place over an entire week, the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games offers the opportunity to watch some traditional Scottish clan games, sample delicious Scottish fare, and listen to the sounds of the bagpipes and other traditional Scottish instruments. Banner Elk Summer Concerts in the Park

The Banner Elk Concerts in the Park start in July and run through August. They are free, sponsored by the Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce. Head to the stage behind Bank of America on Highway 194 in Banner Elk Park every Thursday evening starting at 6:30 p.m. to hear some great sounds. There is also a nice dance floor right in front of the stage! You can bring chairs, blankets, and coolers, and food will be available for purchase.

Banner Elk Arts & Mastercrafts Festival

The mountain community of Banner Elk is well known for its history of being a place of inspiration and respite. Many locals have honed their skills or decided to move here to this beautiful location to be rejuvenated and surrounded by others in the arts community. As a result, there is a large arts and crafts community in the region and many local artisans create timeless treasures and Americana art. In July and August of every year, Banner Elk holds a festival where master craftsmen bring their goods to sell and showcase. These prestigious gatherings are juried and held at Banner Elk Elementary School.

Lees-McRae College Summer Theatre

The LMC Summer Theatre program is amazing and features musicals, dramas and other types of performances on two different stages.
