Experience the 8th Annual Mile High Kite Festival at Beech Mountain this Labor Day Weekend!

Each Beech Mountain Web Cam featured in our Directory of Live Web Cams in North Carolina provides a glimpse into the incredible landscape of this mile-high community. This Labor Day weekend, families from throughout the High Country will be flocking to Beech Mountain North Carolina for the Eight Annual Mile High Kite Festival, where they will have the rare opportunity to fly kites a mile above sea level.

On Saturday, September 4th, kite makers will have the opportunity to compete against one another in the homemade kite contest, during which members of Richmond Air Force and the Wings Across America Kiting and Okra Society—kite clubs from Virginia and North Carolina, respectively—will use their expertise to decide which homemade kite deserves the most praise. The evening after the competition, a street dance, complete with a deejay, will take place in front of the town hall.

The main event, which is sponsored by the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 5, 2010. The first 200 children under the age of 12 to arrive will receive free kites, and kites will be for sale in the meadow next to the Brick Oven Pizzeria, where the event will be held. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own kites as a variety of contests will be held to determine which kite is the largest, the smallest, and the best decorated. All those who enter will receive an official certificate from the mayor of Beech Mountain commemorating the occasion.

In addition to kite flying, visitors can look forward to the kite clubs’ exhibitions and demonstrations, races, face painting, great food, and a selection of crafts to browse. This unique festival is a great way to begin the transition from summer to fall, and the colorful kites gliding through the sky only enhance the beauty of the panoramic views that make Beech Mountain such a scenic location.
