Grandfather Mountain’s Remarkable Rhododendron Ramble is Taking Place Now Through June 13th

The North Carolina High Country is famous for its scenic vistas, many of which are displayed via our Directory of Live Web Cams in North Carolina. Few places in the Blue Ridge Mountains are more recognized for stunning views than Grandfather Mountain North Carolina. This mile-high mountain and family friendly attraction provides exceptional scenery all year long, but the annual Remarkable Rhododendron Ramble, which marks the start of summer, is one of the most spectacular sights the High Country has to offer.

The Remarkable Rhododendron Ramble takes place in early June each year when the rhododendrons begin to bloom. Because of the warmer than normal temperatures we’ve experienced this spring, the experts at North Carolina Grandfather Mountain predict that this year’s display of pinks and purples will be even more vibrant than usual. And, because the mountain encompasses such a wide range of elevations, visitors can enjoy these beautiful flowers for a longer period of time.

The Catawba rhododendron is a special species of rhododendron that was first recorded by Europeans in 1789 when it was discovered by renowned botanist Andre Michaux. One of only three original species of rhododendron from which all other varieties have been cultivated, the Catawba rhododendron is very unique by botanists’ standards. Visitors can expect to see these remarkable flowers at the base of the mountain first. Over a few weeks’ time, it works its way to the higher elevations, where the Mile High Swinging Bridge is located.
