Activities in Ashe

The High Country is an amazing region of the Western North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. The area is named for the high rising mountain peaks and high elevations of most of the communities and towns that are located within the region. The High Country region spans from Blowing Rock all the way to the highest elevations in the region atop Beech Mountain (elevation 5,506 feet). It encompasses communities, towns, and cities such as Boone, Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, Sugar Mountain, and Beech Mountain, and primarily spans two counties: Watauga County and Avery County. Most people consider Boone North Carolina, where Appalachian State University is located, the “heart” of the High Country. The other neighboring towns and resort areas are highly visited destinations where many like to vacation and others are lucky enough to have second homes. This region is growing by leaps and bounds and we provide some of the best shots in the area from our web cams strategically placed throughout the region. Ashe County Cheese

The Ashe County Cheese Factory is the Carolina’s oldest cheese plant and, believe it or not, visiting the Ashe County Cheese Factory is a must for anyone that finds himself or herself in Downtown West Jefferson. The Ashe County Cheese Company is open year round from 8:30 to 5:00 Monday through Saturday, and they welcome all to come by and check out their cheese making process. You can stand in the viewing room and watch as they make cheese and you can pick up delicious creations such as homemade fudge, fresh cheese curd, and other artisan cheeses and local wines for gifts and other special moments anytime. Visiting the Ashe County Cheese Store is one of the most popular Things to Do in Ashe County.

Churches of the Frescoes

The Parish of the Holy Communion is the local Ashe County Parish of the Episcopal church and its two worship spaces, St Mary’s Episcopal Church in West Jefferson and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs, are home to four fresco paintings by renowned muralist and fresco painter Ben Long. Each church houses frescoes, which are large mural-sized paintings that are completed by using a technique that few artists ever master. Ben Long is a celebrated fresco painter and the Ashe County Churches of the Frescoes are truly special places near which visitors love to stop and meditate.

Mt. Jefferson

Mount Jefferson is a large mountain that overlooks West Jefferson North Carolina and portions of Ashe County. The mountain is home to the Mt Jefferson State Natural Area and its summit climbs to an elevation of 4,665 feet above sea level. It is a prominent feature that can be seen from Downtown West Jefferson. From atop Mt Jefferson, you can see regions in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina in a sea of Appalachian Mountain peaks.

The New River

The New River is believed to be one of the oldest rivers in the world by scientists that have studied its flow through the topography of the surrounding area. The New River flows through Todd and other regions of Ashe County North Carolina and creates numerous spots for fishing, canoeing, swimming, tubing, and even whitewater rafting. The New River continues on to Alleghany County and this part of the river is considered calm and perfect for wading and fishing. Horseback riding is also a popular activity in the communities located along the New River and there are several guides in the area that will take you horseback riding as well. New River Zoo

The New River Zoo is a small, locally owned zoo that is situated near the New River in Fleetwood. The zoo is a rescue zoo devoted to caring for animals that zookeeper Keith Stroud has taken in for individuals who could no longer care for their exotic pets. You can visit the Ashe County Zoo and check out exotic animals such as ring-tailed lemurs, monkeys, a Siberian lynx, Fennec foxes, a spotted leopard, water buffalo, and an African serval. The Ashe County Zoo is located off of Big Flatts Church Road in Fleetwood; there are signs for the New River Zoo indicating where to turn on Hwy 221 in between West Jefferson and Deep Gap.

Golf Course West Jefferson

There are two fantastic West Jefferson Golf Courses, as golf is a huge pastime for those who visit the area and those who are lucky enough to call it home. The oldest area Golf Course is the Mountain Aire Golf Course, located in West Jefferson. This golf course community features West Jefferson Real Estate and is home to a fantastic 18-hole golf course. The other area Golf Course is Jefferson Landing on the New River, a golf course community and luxury resort. Check out the Jefferson Landing Cam, one of our Ashe County Cams. Jefferson Landing is located near the New River, right outside of West Jefferson.
