Dollar Days During April at Grandfather Mountain!

April means a lot of things in the High Country mountain areas in and around Boone, Blowing Rock, Valle Crucis, Banner Elk, and outlying regions in Ashe County. For starters, the weather is perfect with ideal temperatures and just the right amount of a breeze. If you are lucky enough to own a home in the area you probably have noticed the abundance of spring flowers and bulbs in the area that have popped up in the last few weeks. Surely all of the nitrogen-rich snowfalls and rain that we’ve experienced lately will benefit the flowers greatly! Whether you are visiting for the first time, or happen to own property here, we hope that you check our Mountain Cams often for the fantastic views, and to see what the weather is like currently. April is often the most unpredictable month in the High Country and areas near Asheville for weather conditions.

One of the activities that High Country residents look forward to during the month of April is visiting Grandfather Mountain North Carolina and enjoying things like Grandfather Mountain Camping, Hiking near Grandfather Mountain, and fishing at Grandfather Mountain Trout Farm, a nearby trout pond. During the month of April, all of those that live or work in the six counties that make up the High Country can explore and enjoy Grandfather Mountain North Carolina for only $1! All you need is proof of local employment or residency. Also, guests that are traveling in the same vehicle as the locals are included and welcome. This special annual offering is sponsored by the High Country Host, so if you live or work in Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, or Wilkes come on out! This special promotion is also extended to students as well—so those that attend colleges and universities in the High Country, that means YOU! Get out and enjoy the fabulous hiking weather before exams start! Students will need to present a driver’s license, college ID, or local utility bill as proof of their residency. Others providing proof of employment can bring along an employee identification badge or a pay stub.

If you plan to visit Grandfather Mountain North Carolina in April, there’s a lot going on! The wildflowers have begun to bloom and you can hike the Grandfather Mountain Profile Trail and see numerous varieties of flowers as the geography changes. The bear feeding outpost, The Bear Hut, which is scheduled to close for good on June 1st of this season, will be open during the month of April, allowing residents and loyal lovers of the mountain to come out and feed the bears one last time. Be advised that, due to construction on the Swinging Bridge Gift Shop area, which is slated to be completed this summer, the Hiking Trails at Grandfather Mountain cannot be accessed from the usual Swinging Bridge parking lot. Hikers should park in the Black Rock parking area and begin hiking there. The Mountain is open every day in April, weather permitting. The hours of operation from April 1 through April 16 are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with ticket sales ending at 5 p.m. Starting April 17, hours extend from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with ticket sales ending at 6 p.m. For current conditions, phone the Grandfather Mountain entrance gate at 828-733-4337.
