Experience Agro-Tourism at its Best at Mountain Farm in Burnsville

The Western NC region and especially the areas near Asheville NC, Black Mountain, Mt Mitchell, and Burnsville NC have a growing reputation for being a hub for the sustainable agriculture movement as well as having large communities that foster natural and holistic wellness and well being. Mountain Farm, a sustainable 24-acre lavender, blueberry, and dairy goat farm is one of these special places. The team at Mountain Farm welcomes you to stop by for a visit or stay for an amazing mountain getaway or NC Honeymoon Getaways. Read on to find out about the day-to-day farm operations and what’s happening this spring and summer at the Mountain Farm.

As a working farm, Mountain Farm is home to a small herd of Saanen and Nubian goats. They provide fresh, hormone and antibiotic free milk that is collected each morning in order to make the unique Handcrafted Soaps and other fine products that are made and sold at Mountain Farm. From June until September the lavender at the farm is in full bloom and guests who are staying at the Blueberry Cottage, a cozy Mountain Cottage and one of the Burnsville NC Vacation Rentals (available May through October) near Mount Mitchell at Mountain Farm, can see the lavender fields in all of their splendor during this time. The team at Mountain Farm is always ready to help you learn how to grow you own lavender at home for personal use, and can give you plenty of great tips for doing so. Mountain Farm uses the flowers to make Lavender Spa and Bath Products by distilling the essential oils of the flowers and using their lovely enhancing fragrance. Also at Mountain Farm is a Meditation Labyrinth, one of a few abyrinths in North Carolina where visitors can visit and meditate for free in the natural surroundings only this one is unique in that it is just a short distance from some of the tallest peaks in the Appalachian Mountains.

Small children and like minded, eco-conscious individuals love visiting Mountain Farm to check out the animals, learn more about lavender and using essential oils, and to buy the specially made, handcrafted Lavender Spa and Bath Products that are available for sale. Children that visit the farm can check out the baby goats and if you visit at the right time you can even watch as the team carries out day-to-day farm activities like feeding the herd and more.

In mid-June, Mountain Farm hosts the annual Lavender Festival, a growing celebration. One of the small Western North Carolina Festivals in the mountains, the Lavender Festival is a fun weekend of workshops on making fun lavender wands, sachets, and wreaths. During the weekend long event, families and kids can also enjoy tours of the farm and gardens, and can learn about cultivation and essential oil extraction. Of course, it’s always a great time for all with live music, lavender plants for sale, a licensed massage therapist, delicious organic festival fare and food vendors and fun children’s activities like bottle feeding the baby goats. Mark your calendars this year for June 19-20, 2010, and please call ahead to let us know your plans if you wish to attend the workshops. We can be reached at 828-675-4856.
