Isle of Palms South Carolina is a small barrier island and city located just northeast of Charleston and near to Mt. Pleasant. It is only 7 miles long and 1 mile wide, yet it offers plenty of breathtaking surroundings and a wonderful natural beach. One must make his or her way over the connector bridge that crosses the salt marsh, Intracoastal Waterway, and ocean in order to get here and, when you do, it always seems as if you are a world away. The city of Isle of Palms operates a nice Marina and many families flock to this location in the summers to enjoy fishing, boating, and a host of other fun Beach activities. Its convenience to Charleston, which is just less than 20 minutes away, makes it an ideal location for those who want to stay near Charleston, and its fantastic shopping, dining, and fun activities. Yet it is in the middle of a natural area that offers lots of picturesque settings, too.
Isle of Palms is known for its clean beach area and family atmosphere. Long ago, it was inhabited by the Sweewee Indians, and during the early colonial period, legend has it that pirates may have buried some of their treasures along the dunes and woods of the Isle of Palms. Today, while no treasure has ever been found, visitors to the Isle of Palms remark that the local Resorts such as Wild Dunes, whose parent company also developed the renowned Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island, are among the best of the Southeast. Wild Dunes Resort, which calls itself Charleston’s Island Resort, is home to two fine Golf Courses, the Harbor Course and the Links Course, both designed by Tom Fazio.
